Birthday Books are designed to be a permanent keepsake for recording important birthdays. Simply write the person's name and year of birth (optional) next to the day of the month they were born. I like to transfer the information to my new calendar at the beginning of each year to remind me throughout the year.
Each of my birthday book series is unique, influenced by the materials used to make the paper and/or the people the books are made for.
So far, I've done the following Limited Edition Birthday Book Series:
Sunflowers, Christmas 1996 These handmade Birthday Books are a continuing series I started in November, 1996 with an edition of 40 Sunflower books which included the birthdays of each member of my immediate family. I made the handmade paper covers out of sunflowers I grew that summer.
Confetti Birthday, February 1997 To make the cover I recycled newspapers, magazines, notebook paper, construction paper, and dryer lint. Throughout the paper pulp and on top of the wet sheets of paper I decorated with , "Happy Birthday" confetti , glitter, cut paper, and curly ribbon. The interior pages are designed on the computer and printed on commercial, recycled paper. The paper edges are cut with several styles of Fiskars scissors in graduated steps. Finally, the books are bound, signed and numbered; this was an edition of 15.
Seashore, March 1997 To make the paper, I gathered a variety of sea oats and grasses from Virginia Beach. They were cut, cooked and pulverized to make the pulp. Small shells, flowers, confetti and other natural materials gathered from the beach were distributed within and on top of the pulp. Also made with this Seashore pulp were 15 9x12"pieces displaying natural and detritus and litter gathered from the seashore.
Recycled Eclectic, April 1997 To make the cover I recycled newspapers, magazines, notebook paper, construction paper, and cardboard. Throughout the paper pulp and on top of the wet sheets of paper I decorated with a variety of shells, flowers (fresh & dried), glitter, beads, "Happy Birthday" confetti, cut paper, "Easter Grass", curly ribbon, and any other small, eclectic objects I could find.
